This is likely going to be the final post I make on here. Right now I'm starting to really get some solid work in on my subject which I now have a title for, and going to make it a little tongue in cheek for some humour on the side to try to get across the point of how ridiculous the whole idea of racism and sexism and shit is in the industry and how it's portrayed mostly in the media and why people don't just get a grip and play a game as a bloody game.
“What is the role of political correctness in the video games industry today?” or “I just blew off some black dudes head with a shotgun! Am I a racist?”
Got a bit of shock factor to it and i think it also makes that bold point there, just because you're playing this role of a character and doing something to someone of another race, should it be taken in the connotations everyone takes out of hand every day.
So far I've included something about resiedent evil 5, which might be obvious because of the huge debate that started, but if there was anything really in there, why was it ever released in the first place, and I've gone on to mention the fact that it's been made by the japanese, who tend to be a little out there and not really in the same view as western opinion is swaying.
Then I'm going to touch on stereotyping characters, specifically to start the most recent one, which is Saszh out of Final Fantasy 13, who is your stereotypical black guy, speaks like one, has an afro, got the general moves, even though the game isn't even out it's sparking quite a debate already, and going to move onto Barret, one of the first sterotypical black characters who never caused offense until just recently, and going onto grand theft auto san andreas and the whole gang idea in that game, the way that it's been crossed over with the bloods and crips and shit.
Then a bit of an attack on sexism, which will link to the stereotyping starting with the rpg world, where every woman is either portrayed as a bit slutty, or a cute geek, and how that in some game environments, this is shown by the players, just like in the mmo world, when you're playing with a mostly male audience, most of the female players tend to be seen as ugly geeks or uptight bitches.
Then I'm going to touch on the people that work in the industry and how most of the people working in the industry outside of japan tend to be white men, and very few women or non white descendants are working within it, which may cause some of these p[reviously stated things as no one in the industry is looking at these nuances people are making cases about for being racist or sexist or anti religious.
Finally I am going to round off by asking about whether video games should be classed as a medium that needs to have freedom of speech and quickly show that someone has been trying to get it into the first amendment of the bill of rights.
I may depending on time frame touch on the idea of violence and drug use within games, and whether these have any bearing on society today, and whether seeing these ideas make people want to do anything regarding then, and the fact that australia seems to be banning alot of the things in these games so that even mature rated games can't be seen by people. Though I think it's something that needs to be touched on with the whole political correctness thing, it may be difficult to actually pull it off without it sounding like the old do video games make me want to go out and murder everyone I see in the street with a pick axe.......sorry, think that's just me getting a little out of my head here ;)
